Program Information
- Microbiology & Immunology
- Master of Science (MSc)
- 3 – 4 years in length (Although students may apply to the PhD program after 3 semesters upon approval by the Graduate Committee. More information can be found here
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
- Student entering with a master's degree should plan for a 3-4 year program; a student entering with a suitable bachelor's degree should anticipate a 5 year program.Number of students enrolled: ~ 60 in the entire department
- Areas of Research: molecular aspects of virology, immunology, and microbial genetics/physiology

Master’s Program
- Degree: Either one of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology & Immunology
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology
- Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry
- Bachelor’s degree in a related domain to the above degrees
- Doctorate in Medicine (MD)
- Doctorate in Dental Surgery (DDS)
- Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
- Required Courses: Applicants that do not have a strong enough background in microbiology may be require to take advanced undergraduate courses in:
- Immunology
- Microbial Physiology and Genetics
- Virology

- Degree: Either one of the following:
- Master’s degree in Microbiology & Immunology
- Master’s degree in Biochemistry
- Master’s degree in a biological science
- A highly qualified student in the departmental MSc program

GPA
- Minimum CGPA: 3.2 out of 4.0
- The University cut-off for CGPA is 3.0, but some students with CGPAs below 3.0 can be considered if the Department believes they possess other strong attributes that would make a successful researcher or scholar (for example, having produced a number of high quality research publications).

- The GRE is not necessary although it is recommended.

Supporting Documents
- Application form
- 2 letters of reference from academic or professional employers who can make a judgement regarding the applicant’s abilities.
- 2 official transcripts from all universities attended; transcripts in a foreign language must be translated into English or French by the institution or a certified translator
- Letter from a prospective supervisor: A letter from a research supervisor that the student chooses from the Departmental faculty. Applicants must not forget to include 3 – 5 top supervisor choices on their application.
- A 6-page outline for a PhD proposal research project a week before seminar presentations (Only for students transferring from MSc to PhD). It must include the nature and hypotheses of the project and any progress made from the year before. For more info click here
- Proof of proficiency in English: for all applicants whose mother tongue is not English
- TOEFL: 95 (no less than 20 in each of the 4 component scores) – iBT and 575 for PBT
- IELTS: band score of 7 or greater
