Program Information

• Master of Arts
  • 2 years in length (full time) or 6 years in length (part time)
  • Includes graduate courses, community practica
  • Fields of research include: cognitive, developmental, forensic, health, organizational, personality and social psychology
    • May pursue a Specialization in Data Science

Admission Requirements

• Degree: B.A. or B.Sc. Honours (or the equivalent) in Psychology *GPA: at least high honours standing (A- or 80%)
• Courses and credit: completion of a research thesis, advanced statistics & credit in a breadth of courses in line with the psychology major
• Proficiency in English: all applicants whose first language is not English must satisfy this requirement in one of the following ways:
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: overall score of 70
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
    • score of 580 on the paper-based test (PBT), or
    • overall score of 86 on the internet-based test (IBT) with a minimum score in each component of:
      • Writing: 22
      • Speaking: 22
      • Reading: 20
      • Listening: 20
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): overall score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each band score
  • Completed ESLA 1900 or ESLA 1905 at Carleton University: final minimum grade of B-
  • Official certification (transcripts) indicating you have studied for the last three years (full-time, non-ESL) in a university in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom or any other country in which the primary language is English, and where the language of instruction in the relevant educational institution was exclusively English.
    • Letters from your universities stating the medium of instruction is English are not acceptable

Supporting Documents

• 1 page statement of intent, PDF (research interests including the research question you wish to pursue)
• 1 preference form (potential supervisors) with ranked preference of up to three potential advisors
• CV/resume, PDF
• Academic transcript(s) and degree certificate(s) from each post-secondary institution you attended (past and/or current), PDF **Transcript(s) must be in the original language and include a certified translation if not in English
  • Transcript(s) must display your full name, academic program and the university’s name along with transcript legends/keys/grading scales
  • Official academic transcript(s) and language proficiency test scores (if applicable) are only required if you are offered admission
• 2 academic references (provide referee information on your application)

Process

• Request an application account here
  • you will receive an email from the Ontario University’s Application Centre (OUAC) with your account login information
• Log in to complete your application and pay your application fee (non-refundable, $100.00)
• Collect and submit your supplementary documents to Carleton Central
• The graduate committee will review your application
  • to check status of your application: contact the Graduate Assistant in the Psychology Department (gradpsychology@carleton.ca)
• Admission decision (after the graduate committee makes recommendations to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs for final approval)
• Accept your offer of admission and funding at Carleton Central

• Teaching Assistanceship (TAship) - incoming students with GPAs over 10.0 may be offered a position (taxable income)
• Research Assistanceship (RAship) - supervisors may offer their students a position at any time
• Entrance Scholarship for incoming students with GPAs in the top percentile
• Departmental Scholarship for incoming students with GPAs in the top percentile
• Graduate Student Travel/Research Bursary for graduate students in financial need
