How to name your article

  • Environment program at Queen's University --> Queen's University Environment
  • Medicine at the University of Toronto --> University of Toronto Medicine

Many schools of medicine, law, etc. are named after donors or honour certain historical figures (e.g. Albert Einstein College of Medicine). If a university network has several universities, please specify which one it is. Example:

  • Incorrect: University of California Medicine. (UC is the system/network of universities, and has several medical schools.)
  • Correct: University of California, San Francisco Medicine (UCSF's medical school is affiliated first and foremost with UCSF.)
  • Correct: York University Law
  • Better still: York University Osgoode Hall Law School

Write the full name of the university in the article's title page, regardless of length. If the name ends in "university", you may omit that. When in doubt about a university's preferred "full" name, consult their official website or Wikipedia.

  • Incorrect: UWO Law
  • Correct: University of Western Ontario Law
  • Incorrect: UC Irvine Medicine
  • Correct University of California, Irvine Medicine

If two universities have highly similar names, especially those that share a type of professional program (e.g. Boston College and Boston University, which both have law schools), please disambiguate them.

  • Incorrect: Washington Medicine
  • Correct: Washington University Medicine (for the one in St. Louis)
  • Also correct: Washington University in St. Louis Medicine (the "in St. Louis" is part of their official name)
  • Also correct: University of Washington Medicine (for the one in Seattle)

For universities with an official name in French, please keep it in French. Example:

  • Incorrect: Laval University
  • Correct: Université de Laval

To go to the listing of programs available at a French university using an English name (e.g. "University of Montreal" for "Université de Montréal"), create a redirect from the English name to the French.
