Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

• Degree: Minimum 60 credits of university courses completed within 2 semesters of 8 consecutive months, preferably in the natural sciences.
  • Candidates applying as Foreign Trained Dentists must have a degree in Dentistry at an accredited institution other than Canada of the U.S.
• Required Courses
  • Biology (6 credits)
  • General Chemistry (3 credits)
  • Organic Chemistry (3 credits)
  • Physics with lab (6 credits) (Topics covered must be either mechanics, waves and sound, heat, electricity and magnetism, light and modern physics. Astronomy and high fidelity topics are not acceptable)
  • Social Science/Humanities (6 credits)
  • Biochemistry (Molecular Biology) (3 credits)
  • Biochemistry (Metabolism) (3 credits)

  • Human Physiology (6 credits)

GPA

• Minimum average of 70% in all required pre-dental courses.
  • If the applicant’s pre-dental course average is less than 70%, then he/she may take upper-level courses that have the applicable pre-dental course as a prerequisite.
• Minimum average of 75% for the two best 30-credit university years
• Average accepted grade: 89.77%

DAT

• Minimum scores:
  • Manual Dexterity: 3
• The University considers all sections of the DAT. However, the only cut-off score that the University has set is obtaining a 3 in the Manual Dexterity component.
• Overall Mean accepted scores (2012-2013): 19.07
  • Academic Average: 18.80
  • Reading Comprehension: 19.88
  • Perceptual Ability: 19.60
  • Carving: 17.56
• Application deadline to write the DAT: September 15, 2012 & January 15, 2013
• The DAT must have been written within 3 years of application deadline.
• Only the best overall DAT score is selected during the admission process.
• The American DAT may be used to determine if a candidate is accepted into the program. However, once accepted, the candidate must then do the Canadian DAT during the first term of attendance.
• The French DAT is not accepted since it has no Reading Comprehension component.

• One page biography for those applying as foreign trained dentists only.
• Official DAT report of the candidate’s best overall DAT score
• Proof of English Proficiency, if applicable. There are various ways to complete this requirement.
  • Those who are invited for an interview must provide 2 official transcripts after the candidate’s second semester grades are available.

Other Requirements

ALL Applicants

• All applicants who enter the program must prove that he/she received the required immunizations and no criminal record before starting the dental program.

Saskatchewan Residents

• Must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
• Must have lived in Saskatchewan for a minimum of 4 years immediately before September 1 of the year of admission. Candidates will be considered residents if they have left the province but lived in Saskatchewan beforehand for 15 years.

Canadian and International Applicants

• Must have completed all the prerequisite courses mentioned above in the section Course and Degree Requirements.
• Must have proof of English proficiency wherever the university courses were not offered in English.
• International applicants must have a Study Permit to study in the country.

Aboriginal Applicants

• Must provide a proof of Aboriginal Ancestry and identify themselves as being aboriginal on their application form.

Foreign-Trained Dentists

• Requires a degree in Dentistry from an accredited university outside of Canada and the U.S.
• Proof of degree and official transcripts
• Must be considered a Saskatchewan Resident as mentioned above in this section.
• Proof of English proficiency if applicable
• Canadian DAT is required
• Interview
• 3 reference letters
• One-page C.V.

Special Case Applicants

• Applies to students who completed one or both of the required 30-credit course-load over 12 months rather than 8. In this case, a letter explaining their situation must be sent to the University.
