Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • All applicants must have completed or be in the process of completing a Bachelor's degree at an accredited university before the expected date of matriculation.
  • NOTE: Applicants must be citizens or documented permanent residents of the United States
  • Required Courses
    • Physics with lab (2 courses)
    • Advanced Mathematics/Statistics (1 course)
    • Organic Chemistry with lab (2 courses)
    • General Chemistry with lab (2 courses)
    • Introductory Biology with lab (1 course)
    • Advanced Biology course (1 course) in either:
      • Biochemistry
      • Molecular & Cell Biology
      • Human Physiology
      • Genetics
      • Microbiology
    • English courses that include Composition & Literature (2 courses)
    • Social and Behavioural Sciences/Humanities (4 courses) in either:
      • Behavioural Psychology

GPA

  • Minimum overall GPA: 3.0 out of 4.0
  • Minimum science GPA: 3.0 out of 4.0
  • If the above are not obtained, a minimum of 20 credit hours of science post-baccalaureate or graduate work must be completed at a 3.5 out of 4.0 or higher.
  • It is strongly recommended to take science prerequisites using an alpha or numerical grading scheme if it offers a pass/fail option.
  • Entering 2016 Class:

MCAT

  • The MCAT must be taken from January 2015 to September 2017 for the 2018 admission cycle.
  • There are no required minimum scores for admission, however completion of the MCAT is required.
  • MCAT must have been written within 5 years of application deadline.

  • Premedical Advisory Committee Report.
    • If the applicant’s school does not have a Premedical Advisory Committee, then he or she is required to have 2 academic letters of reference and 1 letter of reference from another person at the applicant’s discretion. A fourth letter may be sent from an individual involved in an important extracurricular activity who can make a judgement regarding the applicant’s abilities.
    • MD/PhD Applicants: One of the letters must be written from the applicant’s research supervisor.
    • Applicants applying with a Master’s degree or PhD: Applicants should submit a comprehensive report instead of the Premedical Advisory Committee Report if the applicant’s program has such a report.

Interview

  • Interviews are held weekdays from September 2017 to January 2018
  • Interviews are by invitation only via email.
  • Interviews occur on campus at the Carver College of Medicine Admissions Office and are conducted by two members from the College of Medicine Faculty.
  • On the interview day, the applicant will attend an orientation session, a tour of the clinical facilities, lunch, and the conducted interview.
  • The interview lasts 25 minutes. It is also recommended to dress in business attire.

Timeline 2017-2018

  • May 2017: AMCAS application opens
  • June 2017: Completed AMCAS application submission opens
  • September 2017: Last day for all applicants to do the MCAT
  • September 2017: Interviews begin
  • October 1, 2017: Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA or renewal FAFSA designating the University of Iowa (001892) to Federal Student Aid Programs as soon as possible after this date.
  • November 1, 2017: Deadline for receipt of completed AMCAS applications (including MD/PhD)
  • December 15, 2017: Absolute deadline for receipt of supplemental application materials by the Carver College of Medicine. We have a rolling admissions process; therefore, files becoming complete earlier may be reviewed for earlier interview positions. Applications with missing materials will be cancelled or rejected if not received by this date.
  • January 2018: Interviews end
  • March 15, 2018: Target date for all final admissions decisions to be announced
  • August 7-11, 2018: Orientation
  • August 11, 2018: White coat ceremony
