Program Information

Curriculum

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
  • 4 years in length
  • Strong preference to Arkansas residents or those with strong ties
    • Non-Arkansas resident applicants with less than 3.5/4.0 grade point average and MCAT scores below the national average are rarely considered.
  • Applicants must be US citizen or a permanent resident

Freshman Class of 2017 Statistics

  • 2234 applicants from 44 states applied to the university.
  • 174 students were accepted and enrolled into the program.
    • Average GPA of those accepted was 3.78.
    • Average MCAT score of those accepted was 507.
    • Average age of those accepted was 22.5; range from 21-35.
    • 51% accepted majored in biology; followed by 14% which majored in biochemistry.
    • 74% of all accepted applicants majored in one of the tradional sciences.
    • 77% accepted were first-time applicants.

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree completed prior to matriculation is strongly recommended.
    • Applicants who have studied in a premedical background will have no particular advantage over those whom majored in other fields.
  • Required Courses
    • Biology (2 semesters)
    • Chemistry (3 semesters) (to include Organic Chemistry with lab, and Biochemistry)
    • Genetics (1 semester)
    • Statistics (1 semester)
    • Physics (2 semesters)
    • English (2 semesters)
    • Social Science (2 semesters)
  • Advanced Placement (AP) credits can be used to satisfy these requirements given that they appear on the applicants university or college official transcript.

GPA

  • There is no GPA minimum specified to apply.
  • Average accepted GPA 2017: 3.78

MCAT

  • All applicants must take the MCAT exam and release their results to the university.
  • The university will only accept results from an exam taken up to three years before the date of matriculation.
    • Results will not be accepted from exams taken prior to 2015.
  • There is no minimum MCAT scored stated that is required to apply.
  • The average MCAT score for the admitted class of 2017 was 507.

    • Non-refundable application fee - $100
  • The applicants official transcripts must be sent directly from the applicants institutions of study to AMCAS.
  • A criminal background check (CBC)
  • A premedical advisory committee composite evaluation:
    • If it has been two years or less since last attended or graduated from a college, applicants must request a letter of evaluation from the school’s Premedical Advisory Committee.
    • If the school does not have a Premedical Advisory Committee, applicants must ask three individual faculty members to submit letters of evaluation.
  • Letters of recommendation (optional)
    • In addition, applicants may include three personal letters of recommendation in the file.

Interview

  • Arkansas residents:
    • Must be interviewed by a member of the UAMS faculty.
    • It is the applicants responsibility to call the Office of Admissions after the AMCAS application has been submitted to schedule an interview.
    • Applicants must call between August 15 and November 1.
  • Non-Arkansas residents:
    • The interview will be offered by invitation ONLY
    • The admissions committee will meet in mid-December to decide which applicants will receive an interview and they will thus be contacted.
    • Interview day is January 13th, 2018.

Timeline 2017-2018

  • June 1, 2017: Applicants may begin to submit their AMCAS
  • August 15, 2017: Arkansas residents may begin calling to schedule their faculty interview.
  • November 1, 2017: Final deadline for all applicants to submit AMCAS
  • November 15, 2017: Non-Arkansas residents with strong ties to Arkansas must submit letter to UAMS advocating strong ties

to Arkansas. & Deadline to submit transcripts

  • December 9, 2017: Admissions Committee meets to determine which non- Arkansas residents will be invited to be

interviewed in January 2018 and reviewed in February 2018.

  • December 18, 2017: Letters to early accepts for Arkansas residents.
  • January 15, 2018: ALL application documentation must be received
  • January 22, 2018: Letters to early accepts for Arkansas residents.
  • Late February, 2018: Letters mailed to all applicants informing them of their admissions status.
