Program Information

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS)
  • 5 years in length
  • Applicants to Admission ratio of 7.3:1

Curriculum
The five year program is divided as follows:

  • First and Second year: Study an integrated program covering scientific basis of medicine and clinical experience
  • Third year: Three 10-week clinical placements
  • Fourth year: In depth pathology module, covering essential clinical pathology followed by a variety of clinical specialties
  • Fifth year: Seven 3-week clinical attachments in a rotation of areas; 8-week elective period; 2 senior placements (one in medicine and one in surgery)

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • The minimum entry requirement is a 2:1 in a BSc, or a PhD in a relevant biological subject.
  • Some examples of relevant biological subjects include:
    • Biochemistry
    • Cell biology
    • Physiology
    • Bio-engineering
    • Biomedical Sciences
    • Pharmacology

BMAT

  • The university requires that all applicants complete the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) in the year of application in order to be considered for an interview.
  • The BMAT is a 2 hour pen and paper test consisting of three sections:
    • Aptitude and Skills: 35 multiple choice questions in 60 minutes
    • Scientific Knowledge and Application: 27 multiple choice questions in 30 minutes
    • Writing Task: 1 written task out of the choice of 3 questions in 30 minutes
  • For 2018 entry, there are two test dates:
    • September 2017
    • November 2017
  • 2017 cutoff for BMAT scores were as follows:
    • 4.5 in section 1
    • 4.6 in section 2
    • 2.5 and grade B in section 3

Interview

  • Interviews take place at the South Kensington Campus from November to March
  • Interviews last 15 minutes, including time for the panel to make a decision.
  • The panel consists of a chairperson, two selection committee members, and a senior medical student.
  • The interviewers are looking for the following:
    • Motivation and realistic approach to medicine and medical research as a career
    • Capacity to deal with stress
    • Evidence of working as both a leader and a team member
    • Evidence of commitment to the value of the NHS constitution
    • Ability to multi-task
    • Likely contribution to university life
    • Communication skills and maturity of character
  • The results from the interview are received typically within two weeks, depending on the circumstance.

Selection Process

Approximately 600 applicants, about 90 receive interviews, and only 45 get selected for the program.
The selection process is as follows:

  • Grades and content of previous degree
  • BMAT scores
  • Evidence of commitment to the values of the NHS
  • Motivation and understanding of medicine as a career
  • Community activities
  • Leadership and teamwork interests
  • Referee's report
