Help:Editing
This is a tutorial on the skills you will mostly ever need to edit on Redbooks. For more complete tutorials, visit the following:
Creating a page
- Go to "search" and type the name of your article.
- Click on the red link.
Formatting
- bold --> bold
- italics --> italics
- bold italic --> bold italic
Ensure both sides have equal numbers of apostrophes.
Headings
You can make headings and subheadings by typing equal signs. Make sure there are equal numbers of equal signs on either side.
Links
- To make links to websites outside the main Redbooks site, type . If you want the link to show up like this, then type Insert Name Here.
- To make links within the Redbooks site, type Anatomy to get McGill Anatomy.
- To get an internal link to show up like this, type like this.
Bullets
Type asterisks (*). The more asterisks you type, the more indented the bullet becomes. For numbered lists, type #.
Example
*Point 1
**Point 2
Result:
- Point 1
- Point 2
You do not need to add
afterwards.
Categories
Categories are there to provide a Boolean searching system for our articles. Think of it as a library catalogue. To insert a category, type .
Listing it as something else
If you want "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" to be listed under "Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of", type .
Subcategories
Let's say A is a subcategory of B. On the page for Category:A, type . On category B's page, it will show A as a subcategory.
"Creating" a category page
As long you type on a page, that category will have the page "filed". If you want to "create" the category page to see the page as a member of that category, then type something.
Example
I want to create Category:Mark Twain Novels for Tom Sawyer. I type . Now, if I go to , it's says the page hasn't been created, but I can clearly see Tom Sawyer listed right there. Click "edit" at the top, type something, and your category page is now "created".
Removing a table of contents
Type __NOTOC__
Line spacing
This sounds elementary, but it's very possible some of you will screw it up. To add a line break with a small space in-between, press Enter twice. To add a line break with no space in-between, type
.
Examples
Line 1 Line 2
Result:
Line 1
Line 2
Line 1
Line 2
Result:
Line 1
Line 2
Line 1 Line 2
Result:
Line 1
Line 2
Signatures
To sign your name on a talk page, type four tildes (i.e. ~~~~)
Watchlists
- Click "track changes" to watch a page.
- In the top right corner, click "pages I stalk". You can now see if someone else edited the page you were watching.
