Program Information

  • M.Sc.
    • 2 years, project and/or thesis

    • 4 years, project and/or thesis
  • Graduate programs provide studies and research in major fields:
    • comparative respiratory and cardiovascular physiology
    • neurophysiology (electrophysiology, cellular imaging in neurons and glial cells, in vitro and in vivo studies of cerebral ischemia)
    • vascular function, ion channels and endogenous gases
    • calcium channels and neuroendocrine secretion
    • hemoxygenase system
    • cardiovascular pathology

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • M.Sc. - either one of:
    • Four-year honors degree, or equivalent, in an academic discipline relevant to the proposed field of study
    • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree
  • PhD Program
    • Master’s degree, or equivalent, in a relevant academic discipline

GPA

  • M.Sc.
    • A cumulative weighted average of at least 70% (U of S grade system equivalent) in the last two years of study (e.g. 60 credit units)
  • Ph.D. (from a Master’s degree)
    • A cumulative weighted average of at least 70% (U of S grade system equivalent) in the last two years of study (e.g. 60 credit units)
    • Demonstrated ability for independent thought, advanced study, and independent research

Applicants should contact potential supervisors (click here) by email and receive a response before preparing a formal application.
(The faculty member will notify the Graduate Secretary of the applicant’s name and she will reply with the instructions on how to proceed with an application through the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies)

  • Online application (approx. 20 minutes to complete; you may save your application and return to it later with your Login ID and PIN)
    • Personal information e.g. name, address, etc.
    • Names and email addresses of your three referees
    • Your educational history from all post-secondary institutions you've attended
    • non-refundable $90 application fee
  • Three letters of recommendation
    • Two of your referees must be persons under whom you've studied
    • The third may be either a person whom you have worked professionally under, or under whom you've studied
  • Transcripts
    • Preliminary Statement of Marks: unofficial PDF copies of your academic transcript(s) from each post-secondary institution attended (single documents)
      • must include a grading key/legend
      • Official copies of your transcripts will only be required once you have been offered admission
  • Proof of English language proficiency may be required for international applicants and for applicants whose first language is not English
    • It is your responsibility to have completed an official and approved test with the appropriate score before the application deadline, if required

Timeline

Applications are accepted throughout the year

  • Once you begin an application, choose one of the following application forms in the system:
    • Graduate (B) Fall term start (September)
    • Graduate (C) Winter term start (January)
    • Graduate (D) Spring term start (May)

Tuition 2018-2019

  • In their applications, students should identify their financial status and state if attendance is contingent on receiving financial aid.
    • The department employs graduate students as marking assistants and a limited number of scholarships, research fellowships and teaching assistantships are available -- there is a keen competition for this financial support.
    • Applications for Departmental Scholarships, Research Fellowships and Teaching Assistantships may only be submitted after a student has been admitted.
  • Graduate students pay tuition three times a year for as long as they are enrolled in their program.
    • Canadian students: $1379.00/ term = $4137.00 total per academic year
    • International students: $2178.82/ term = $6536.46 total per academic year
