  • A course-based M.Sc. program is also offered: Food Safety & Quality Assurance MSc (course-based; MSc FSQA) or Graduate Diploma (online; GDip)
    • MSc FSQA: online & on-campus courses, including a research project course
      • Work with a Faculty Advisor over two semesters, graded research paper and poster presentation
      • Can be completed full-time in 4 semesters
    • GDip FSQA: online courses
      • Can be completed full-time in 2 semesters

Admission Requirements

  • As part of the application requirements, you are required to secure a faculty advisor to supervise your program (review faculty profiles in the faculty directory here)
  • Postings of available Graduate Student (MSc & PhD thesis) positions are listed here. However, you can contact faculty with a statement of interest relevant to their field of research.

Course and Degree Requirements

  • M.Sc.
    • Degree: Four year Honours bachelor’s degree, or equivalent
    • GPA: Minimum B- average over the last two years of full-time study
  • Ph.D.
    • Degree: Bachelor’s and Master’s degree
    • GPA: Minimum B average in the Master’s program (department may require higher standing)
    • Demonstrated strong potential for research

    • Application fee: ~$110
  • Transcripts: All post-secondary education transcripts, including incomplete studies/programs, transfer courses, letter of permission and exchanges
    • If you have requested an official transcript through the OUAC application portal, please do not upload an electronic version of it on WebAdvisor
  • References: Minimum of 2 academic references
    • Each referee must submit a Referee Assessment Form on behalf of the applicant.
  • If your first language is not English, you will be required to submit the results of a standardized language test

Deadlines for the MSc Food (thesis-based) and PhD Food applications:

Tuition 2018-2019

  • Domestic Full-time tuition and fees (3 semesters):
    • MSc: $7,846
    • PhD: $7,768
    • Student fees: $1,665
  • International FUll-time tuition and fees (3 semesters):
    • MSc: $19,525
    • PhD: $18,732
    • Student fees: $1,665; UHIP fees: $612
  • Anticipated living expenses (e.g. room & board, transport, books, misc.): $13,600-$23,200

Funding

  • Minimum stipend of $17,500.00 for all domestic and international doctoral students for a period of three years
    • Funding package made up of a number of components -- one or more of the following:
      • Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA)
      • Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)
      • Graduate Service Assistant (GSA)
      • Scholarship (external and/or internal)
      • or you may be self-funded.
