Program Information

  • Master of Science (MSc)
  • Computer Science
  • Program begins in the Fall or Winter semester
  • Areas of Research:

  • Program Duration: Approximately 6 semesters in length for the MSc, and 12 for the PhD

Course and Degree Requirements

Master’s Program
  • Degree: Candidates are required to have an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or an Honours degree in another field but with a minor in Computer Science.
  • Required Courses (applicants need courses in the following subjects: )
    • Introductory Programming
    • Intermediate Programming
    • Software Systems Development
    • Data Structures
    • Discrete Structures
    • Mathematics
  • The Candidate must also have 3 of the following second-year or higher-level courses:
    • Hardware and/or Assembly Language
    • Digital Systems
    • Simulation and/or Modelling
    • Database
    • Operating Systems
    • Computer Algorithms
    • Automata Theory
    • Statistics
  • The candidate also needs two more third or higher-level year courses:
    • Courses that have a connection with the applicant’s research’s goals.
PhD Program
  • Degree: Candidates must have a Master’s degree or have exceptional grades in an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science provided that they show strong research potential.

GPA

Master’s Program
  • Minimum: B average during the last two years of study in university
PhD Program
  • Minimum: Applicants are usually required to have completed a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and must have achieved a minimum B average in their Master’s program.

GRE

  • The GRE is recommended for candidates who have completed their university studies outside of Canada and are applying for the PhD program. The General GRE, Computer Science-specific GRE or both may be taken.

Supporting Documents

  • Two letters of reference from individuals who can make a judgement regarding the applicant’s educational abilities.
  • Original copies of all post-secondary transcripts that must be sent from the appropriate institutions
  • C.V.
  • Statement of Interest describing research interests in Computer Science and why they interest you

PhD Applicants:

  • Those who are funded by a governmental program are required to provide an original signed letter describing the amount of funding and the dates covered by it.

Other Requirements

  • Students before entering their first year (and even before submitting an application) should consult with University staff members to discover research projects that are happening in the Department and must select a potential thesis advisor.
  • Proof of English proficiency if the applicant’s mother tongue is not English. The applicant will need the following minimum scores (scores more than 2 years old are unaccepted):
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
      • Paper-based test: 660
      • Computer-based test: 250 with a 5.0 essay rating
      • Internet-based test: 100 total with a minimum of 26 on writing and speaking
    • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 90 with at least 3 in speaking and no score under 80
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 7.5
    • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: 70 overall, 70 in writing and speaking with no score under 60
    • University of Guelph English Language Certificate: Advanced Level
  • Proof of Canadian status. International applicants will need photocopies of the following:
    • Permanent resident card
    • Study permit
    • Citizenship paper or Canadian birth certificate

Timeline

  • There are no application deadlines per se, although applicants should follow the following guideline:
    • International Students: Applicants should apply at least 9 months in advance before the beginning of the semester (spaces for the Fall semester typically fill up by March).
  • Winter: October 1st
  • Summer: February 1st
  • Fall: June 1st

Tuition 2018-2019

  • Canadian Student
    • First Year Tuition (full-time): $ 2774.10 per semester
  • International Student
    • First Year Tuition (full-time): $ 6638.39 per semester
  • Aboriginal/Native American students from the U.S. can be exempt from paying International fees if they identify themselves as Aboriginal or Native American on their application form.
