Program Information

  • Microbiology & Infectious Diseases
  • Master of Science (MSc) program
    • Course-based: 1-2 years (max. 6 years part-time)
    • Thesis-based: 2-4 years
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program
    • 4-6 years

    • Gastrointestinal Research Group (GIRG)
    • Inflammation Research Network (IRN)

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

Master's Program

  • Degree: Four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited university
    • Decisions to accept applicants with a three-year degree are done on a case by case basis. Contact the program administrator for details.
  • GPA: minimum 3.30 (on the University of Calgary four-point system; equivalent to a "B+") based on the last two years of the undergraduate degree consisting of a minimum of 60 units (10 full-course equivalents)

PhD Program

  • Degree: MSc degree, or relevant master’s degree, recognized by the Faculty of Graduate Studies; or transfer from MSc program; or, in exceptional cases, BSc degree or equivalent
    • Direct-entry to the PhD program from a bachelor’s level program should be discussed with the program administrator
  • GPA: minimum 3.30 based on the last two years of the undergraduate degree consisting of a minimum of 60 units (10 full-course equivalents) and any master’s course work if applicable

Supporting Documents

  • Application form completed online with a non-refundable application fee
  • One official sealed transcript from every post-secondary institution attended should be mailed by the institution directly to the Graduate Science Education (GSE) office (applicants who have attended the University of Calgary (UofC) do not need to send their UofC transcript)
    • Transcripts not in English:
      • Send one official sealed transcript(s) to a certified translator, the translator must mail the following to the GSE office in a sealed envelope:
        • A verbatim, certified translation of the transcript
        • The official sealed transcript in the original language used for translation
  • An English Language Test Score must be sent by the testing company directly to the Graduate Science Education (GSE) office
  • Two academic letters of references (names and current contact information must be entered in the online application)
  • Up-to-date CV or resume
  • Confirmation of Supervision and Guaranteed Funding form completed by the supervisor and student
    • Course-based programs do not require supervisors or guaranteed funding
  • English Language Requirement, can be met in one of the following ways:
    • Completion of a three- or four-year degree offered by an accredited university in a country the University of Calgary recognizes as English language proficiency exempt
    • Completion of the University of Calgary’s International Foundations Program with a grade of 'A'
    • Completion of one of the following English Language Tests from the last two years:
      • TOEFL (Internet-based): 105
      • TOEFL (Paper-based): 600
      • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 7.5
      • MELAB (Michigan English Language Battery): 86
      • PTE (Pearson Test of English): 75
  • Programs offered through the Graduate Science Education Office do not require GRE scores; individual supervisors may require these scores
    • Applicant must discuss this issue individually with any prospective supervisors

Other Requirements

  • A confirmed supervisor should be in place prior to submitting an online application. Applicants are responsible for finding a supervisor.

  • Program Starting September 1st: April 1st (international), June 1st (domestic)
  • Program Starting January 1st: August 1st (international), Oct 1st (domestic)
  • Program Starting May 1st: December 1st (international), March 1st (domestic)
  • Program Starting July 1st: February 1st (international), May 1st (domestic)

Tuition 2018-2019

  • Canadian & permanent resident: General Fees + Program Fees (12 months of study) = $7,423 CAD
    • After the first 12 months, Program Fees are replaced by Continuing Fees: $1,627 CAD
  • International Students: $14,525 CAD
  • Continuing Fees: $3,693 CAD

Funding

Minimum Stipend Guarantee (thesis-based graduate programs):

  • Master's: $21,000/year
  • PhD: $23,000/year

Funding should be discussed with your prospective supervisor prior to submitting your online application.

Third Party funded students do not qualify for supervisor stipends.
