Program Information

  • Veterinary Sciences
  • Master of Science (MSc)
    • Program length: Minimum 3 semesters (1 year) and a maximum of 6 semesters (two years) for full-time students and 9 semesters (3 years) for part-time students. From this time period, 2 consecutive semesters must be done full time at the University or at an affiliated research lab.
    • There are also different program options requiring a thesis to choose from:
      • Biomedicine
      • Epidemiology
      • Veterinary Hygiene and Food Innocuousness
      • Medicine of Laboratory Animals
      • Microbiology
      • Pharmacology
      • Reproduction
      • Clinical Sciences
    • Options not requiring a thesis include:
      • Pathology and Microbiology
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
    • Program length: Maximum of 15 semesters (5 years). The program may be completed on a full-time or half-time basis.
    • There are also different program options requiring a thesis to choose from:
      • Epidemiology
      • Microbiology
      • Pathology
      • Pharmacology
      • Reproduction

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

Master’s Program
  • Degree: Either a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DMV), a Bachelor’s degree in Science or an equivalent degree. However, the option Medicine of Laboratory Animals requires a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. Some research projects may require that the applicant have the right to practice veterinary medicine in Quebec.
  • Required Courses: Candidates who did not complete a DMV may be required to complete extra courses upon admission.
PhD Program
  • Degree: A Master’s degree in the domain of Biological Sciences or have an equivalent degree.

  • Minimum: 3.0 out of 4.3 (or the equivalent) in the Bachelor’s program
PhD Program
  • Minimum: 3.3 out of 4.3 (or the equivalent) in the Master’s program

Supporting Documents

  • Application form
  • Copy of the applicant’s transcript with final marks included
  • Bachelor’s diploma (to enter the Master’s program) or Master’s diploma (to enter the PhD program)
  • Birth certificate (or an official document that indicates the applicant’s name, date of birth, sex, cityand country of birth and the full names of his/her parents).
  • Letter of intent that explains career objectives, interests of the candidate and reasons why the applicant wishes to pursue graduate studies.
  • C.V.
  • Financing plan for studies (International students only)
  • Research project description between 200 – 500 words describing the outline of your proposed research (PhD program only)

Other Requirements

  • Good knowledge of French and English.
    • A French Test may be required for those whose mother tongue is not French or whose past studies were not completed in French.
  • Students before entering their first year should consult with University staff members to discover research projects that are happening in the Department and must select a potential thesis advisor and have their advisor selected by the end of their first semester.
  • French applicants (from France): A copy of the applicant’s passport.

    • Applicants with Canadian Citizen status: A copy of your Canadian citizenship card
    • Applicants with Permanent Resident status: A copy of the IMM1000 or IMM5292 (Emploi et Immigration Canada) forms
    • Applicants with a Study Permit: A copy of your study permit, health insurance and the Certificat d’acceptation du Québec if taking more than 12 credits.

  • Applicants that need to prove their status as a Quebec Resident:
    • Applicants born in Quebec: A copy of your birth certificate
    • Aboriginal applicants living in Quebec, one of the following is required:
  1. A letter signed by an authority of the Conseil de bande stating that you or your parents are living on the reserve in Quebec
  2. An official list of the members of the Conseil de bande that includes your name
  3. For beneficiaries of the Baie James Convention, a card given out by the Makivik Society or the Grand Council of the Crees that shows your beneficiary number.
  • If you are unable to fulfill one of the 3 ways mentioned above, you may do one of the following:
  1. Present a Certificat de Sélection du Québec (CSQ) or an official letter from the Ministère des Relations avec les citoyens et de l’immigration du Québec stating that you hold a CSQ
  2. Filling out the following document.
