Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • Language of instruction is exclusively French.
  • If the applicant’s previous language of instruction was not French they may be required to pass a French knowledge test ($60 fee).
  • Students are accepted from all over Canada.
  • Applicants must be Canadian citizens or have permanent resident status.
  • Acceptance is based on the following breakdown: 40% marks, 60% interview/CV/letter of motivation.
  • All applicants apply to the preparatory program (1 year) and then continue on to the 4 year professional program to obtain their O.D.

Criteria

Required classes

  • CEGEP level: must hold a DEC in science and have completed the following courses:
    • Biology 301 and 401
    • Chemistry 101, 201 and 202
    • Math 103, and 203
    • Physics 101, 201, 301
  • If the applicant does not hold a DEC, they must have completed a minimum of 48 university credits or hold a bachelor degree in any of the following: audiology, biochemistry, ergotherapy, nutrition, orthophony, nutrition, pharmacy, physiotherapy, dentistry, or biological, biomedical, or nursing science.
  • A bachelor degree in any of the above will allow the applicant to skip the preparatory year and go straight into the 4 year professional program.

GPA

  • Min. average GPA is not provided. Min. 32 CRC from CEGEP required.

Supporting Documents

  • A copy of the applicant’s cumulative grades is required. This includes high school, CEGEP, and university grades.
  • If the applicant is contacted for an interview, a CV and a letter of motivation must be submitted.
    • The CV is to be no more than 2 pages in length, written in French. It must be submitted the day of the interview.
    • The letter of motivation is to be no more than 2 pages in length, written in French. It should detail the applicant’s interest in the optometry profession, describe their knowledge of the profession and how they view it. It must be submitted to the School of Optometry on the day of the interview.

French language conditions

  • Applicants must pass the “Épreuve uniforme de langue et littérature française du ministère de l'Éducation du Québec”.
  • Applicants must obtain a minimum of 785/990 on the test de français international (TFI).

Interview

  • Competitive applicants for entry will be asked to attend a 30 minute admissions interview ($50.00 fee)
  • The interviewers will assess an applicant’s motivation, aptitudes, judgment and personality.
  • Interviews will be granted based solely on the applicant’s academic success.

Tuition

  • Tuition (per session) for a full time student (equivalent of 15 credits) from Quebec or the rest of Canada is $834.15.
  • Tuition (per session) for a full time foreign student (equivalent of 15 credits) is $4,269.15.
  • Students who must rent an apartment should estimate that their living expenses will be $1000/per month. This includes:
    • Rent and utilities: $450/month
    • Food: $275/month
    • Transportation: $45/month
    • Books and supplies: $600/year
    • Telephone: $30/month
    • Misc.: $150/month
  • Applicants must plan to spend $6000 for required instruments in their first year of study.

Statistics

  • In 2006, 285 applications were made for the 32 spots available.
  • There are 14 spots or less reserved for applicants from outside Quebec. The remaining are reserved for Quebec applicants.
