Program Information

  • Microbiology and Immunology
  • Master of Science (MSc) – 2 years in length
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – 3-4 years in length

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

Master’s Program
  • Degree: A Bachelor’s degree in health sciences, or any other degree deemed equivalent by the University.
    • Applicants that do not meet the degree requirement be required to complete extra undergraduate courses in order to meet the degree requirement.
PhD Program
  • Degree: A Masters degree in a similar domain, or any other degree deemed equivalent by the University.
    • Applicants that do not meet the degree requirement may be required to complete extra undergraduate courses in order to meet the degree requirement.
  • Students who completed their Masters in Microbiology and Immunology may be able to fast-track their Masters to enter the PhD program more quickly provided that they have the following:
    • Submitted a request at least 1 month before the end of the fifth session and at least 1 week before registering for the second seminar course MCB-7010.
    • Have acquired 11 or 12 credits minimum for the Masters program and registered in the course MCB-7010
    • Obtained a minimum cGPA of 3.33 out of 4.33 in the Masters courses
    • Have done their experimental work under the supervision of the same research supervisor as the one who co-ordinated their Masters program
    • Obtained a letter of recommendation from the research supervisor stating the student’s potential to succeed in the PhD program.

GPA

Masters Program
  • Minimum: 2.67 out of 4.33 during the Bachelor’s degree. Applicants also need to show strong research potential. Those who have had a recognized pertinent experience, the requirement may be 2.67 out of 4.33.
PhD Program
  • Minimum: There is no GPA requirement set by the University.

Other Requirements

  • It is desirable to have good written comprehension in English
  • Knowledge of a second language (French being the main language); one that is necessary to complete the applicant’s research project (usually English). If needed, the applicant will need to take appropriate language courses to supplement the lack of knowledge of the language. More info can be found here (under “Exigences particulières”)
  • Proof of French proficiency with either:
  1. A DEC obtained after 1997 in a francophone academic institution
  2. Successful completion of the test issued by the Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec used until 1998
  3. An attestation issued by another francophone university which includes requirements on general knowledge of the French language deemed equivalent by the Université de Laval
  4. A diploma obtained from a French lycée (the applicant must submit a demand for an exemption from doing a French test such as the Test de français Laval Montréal (TFLM) to the registrar’s office.
  5. Successful completion of a francophone test (such as the TFLM) for francophone students. Non-francophone students must do a test designed for non-francophones and if their results are not sufficient, they may have to pass French courses (which do not count as credits towards the Medicine program).
  • Students who obtain less than 60% on the TFLM must pass 2 French courses in which the first one must be done within the first year of their program. The 2nd course must be completed within the first 2 years of their program.
  • Students who obtain between 60% - 75% must complete one French course within the first 2 years of their program.
  • Students who obtain 75% or more do not need to do a French course.
  • Students with a Bachelor’s degree in Education for English as a second language who obtain less than 60% must pass a French course within the first 2 years of their program. Those who get more than 60% do not need to do a French course.
