Program Information

• Microbiology and Immunology
• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
• 5 – 5.5 years in length
• Program size: approximately 50 graduate students
• Program involved research with a thesis and coursework in microbiology, immunology, genetics, cell and molecular biology, and biochemistry.
• Applicants apply to the Microbiology and Immunology program and do laboratory work in this program during their first year. Afterwards, however, students may undergo lab rotations and work in any of the following 13 Biosciences programs:

• Degree: An undergraduate degree from a U.S. university or an accredited International university.

  • Organic Chemistry (2 quarters or 1 year)
  • Physical Chemistry (1 quarter or 1 semester)
  • Physics (2 quarters or 1 year)
  • Biochemistry (1 quarter or 1 semester)

Supporting Documents

• Statement of purpose indicating previous research experiences and current research interests as well as future goals (max. 2 pages).
• Three letters of recommendation. One of them at least must come from a person who can properly assess the candidate’s research abilities.
• 2 official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended for at least 1 full academic year.

Other Requirements

• Proof of English proficiency for applicants whose mother tongue is not English except for applicants who completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at a recognized institution in English. The applicant will need to complete either of the following tests and need the following minimum scores and have them sent to the School of Graduate Studies:
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
    • Paper-based test: 600
    • Computer-based test: 250
    • Internet-based test: 100
  • TOEFL must be completed within 18 months of the application deadline.
