• 4 years in length
• Note: Pennsylvania residents have a better chance of being admitted to School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

• Degree: Minimum 3 years of undergraduate study
  • Note: Although third year applicants (90 credits) are considered, the more academic course work you have completed the stronger the application.
• Required Courses:
  • English: 6 semester credits (at least 3 must be in composition)
  • Physics: 8 semester credits, including 2 laboratories.
  • Chemistry: 12 semester credits, including laboratory in at least one course;
    • 8 semester credits in general chemistry
    • At least 4 semester credits in organic chemistry.
  • Biology or Zoology: 9 semester credits (3 courses).
    • At least one course of which must cover the basic principles of genetics.
  • Microbiology: 3 semester credits.
  • Biochemistry: 3 semester credits.
  • Social Sciences or Humanities: 6 semester credits.
  • Calculus: 3 semester credits.
  • Statistics: 3 semester credits.
• Note: A grade of C (2.0) or better must be earned for these courses.

GPA

• The average GPA for the 2017 entering class was 3.58.

GRE

• The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is the test required.
• The GRE reporting code for Penn Vet is 2775.
• Average scores:
  • Verbal score: 156.9.
  • Quantitative score: 156.8.
• The Analytical score is excluded from the application and so the writing sample is not required.
• When considering scores from multiple test dates, the highest combined verbal and quantitative scores from the same test date will be considered.

Supporting Documents

• Application is made by using the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS) application.
• Note: There is no paper application. It is necessary to check the AAVMC Web site.
• There is a $75 processing fee to be paid by check or money order payable to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania.
  • The fee should be submitted with the Supplementary Information Card. No application will be processed without receipt of the processing fee by September 17 at noon E.D.T.
• Transcript from all attended universities.
• Regarding extracurricular activities:
  • Volunteering or working in a veterinary clinic will help prove to the admissions committee the applicant's commitment in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.
    • A minimum of 500 hours is recommended.
• Letters of recommendation.
• GRE scores.

Timeline for Fall 2019

• Veterinary Medical College Admission Service (VMCAS) will provide an electronic application by May 2018 for entry in Fall 2019.
• An application fee will be charged by VMCAS while Penn will charge a processing fee of $75.
  • VMCAS will forward the application to the applicant's list of schools at the application Web site.
• VMCAS will process and forward the applicant's letters of evaluation.
  • Electronic Letters of Recommendation, eLOR, will be the method of submitting recommendations to VMCAS.
  • There will be no Evaluation Form online to be downloaded and copied as in previous years.
  • The applicant must directly send his/her transcripts and GRE scores to the schools which he/she is applying.
• Application deadline: September 17, 2018 at 11:59PM for receipt of the application and evaluations at VMCAS and for receipt of transcripts by Penn.
• The last date to take the GRE is 4 weeks before the deadline.
  • GRE scores should be forwarded to the Admissions Office by October 15, 2018.
